The Symbolism of Raga

Raga is a specific mental modification (cittavrtti) characterized by affection, passion, or simply, desire. According to the revered commentator Bhaskararaya, the weapon she holds is not merely a physical object, but a manifestation of human psychology:

रागएव स्वं वासनामयं रूपं यस्य स्थूलस्य पाशस्य तेनान्या वामाधःकरेत्युक्ता |

Attachment itself is the subtle, impression-formed (vasanamaya) essence of the physical noose; with that noose, her lower-left hand is adorned.

The Master of Illusion

Just as a physical noose binds a person, raga binds our mind to the material world. We get tied up in our relationships, our careers, our possessions, and our endless pursuit of comfort.

By holding this weapon, the Goddess reveals herself as Mahamaya, the supreme controller of iccha (will and desire). She governs the very forces that tie us to this worldly existence.

Because she holds the noose, she is the master of it, not its victim. This signifies that she alone possesses the power to untie these knots. By surrendering to the one who holds the noose, she releases us from our self-made material bondage and guides us toward true spiritual freedom.
